 A long time ago.

 Ancient Gaul, to be exact, was when the Brethren manifested on Earth. Nathanael’s had a storied career as a military man. Across the ages, he’s fought as a soldier and eventually moved up the ranks to more specialized positions. He’s seen more bloodshed than anyone in the world, and he’s been responsible for many of those kills.  Why? It’s all in the name of Brethren Justice. Evil’s influence is far-reaching and powerful.

 In modern times, he spent most of his time on Black Ops missions, successfully cutting down the world’s most dangerous people. Most recently, a mission gone wrong ended his eternal tour due to his enormous guilt. Now he’s taken a more solo approach to evil-wrangling as a bounty hunter. But Satan’s gotten wind of his internal struggles and is poised to exploit them.

Here’s a tease:

Callie has secrets, too many to count.

For twenty years she’s been living a lie as Callie Worthington, hiding from the monsters who brutally murdered her parents for possession of the Elixxir of Life. Unsuccessful before, their killers have found her and will stop at nothing to acquire the Elixxir. And see her dead.

Nathanael has a couple of secrets, too. A nasty one in particular blurs the line separating Good from Evil. As an immortal Brethren Warrior, though, he must retrieve the Elixxir before it falls into the wrong hands. Just how he’s going to get it out of Callie’s is the big question.

Tempers flare and passion ignites as Callie and Nathanael reach out to each other with their own hidden agendas. She needs his protection. He needs the Elixxir. Will their fiery passion lead to lasting love, or will their web of secrets and lies ultimately destroy them both?

Secrets, lies, and love’s loyalties tested. What price for immortality? What price for love?

Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he saw the shower curtain undulate and heard the door click. Damn, he hadn’t heard it open!

“Nate? Are you okay?” Callie’s voice slid seductively in between the pelting water music.

He wasn’t. And he couldn’t lie. He wouldn’t. Not to her.

“No, I’m not.”

She moved the curtain aside, but he refused to turn around, choosing to remain leaning against the back wall. He sensed her step in behind him and rest a gentle hand on his back.

“What are you doing?” His voice shook with restraint.

“I’m here to see what’s wrong. Nathanael, tell me what’s wrong.”

The insistent tone broke through his crumbling defenses. He reached behind him, grasped her hands, and pulled her close to wrap her body around his like a safety shroud. He held on, as though he would fall into an abyss otherwise.

“Jesus!” As she spoke, she clutched him even tighter. “What can I do? Just tell me. What?”

“Tell me I’m good.”

He waited. The crashing of water against his shoulders filled the space meant to reassure him of his worth. Even should she reply so, would he believe? Satan had been messing with him for so long now, he didn’t believe in much of anything anymore.
